Re: Another IT/hobby-musician type

Welcome to the forum! Post some of your recordings so we can hear what you do.

Nixos is pretty geeky. How do you like it for audio? Any advantages over the distros in Debian-and-its-Derivatives land?

Re: Ardour monitor settings to use two soundcards

There are some screenshots on this page: https://alansanderson.band/2017/09/04/focusrite-scarlet-2i2-in-a-linux-home-studio/ I wrote this a couple of years ago when I bought my USB audio interface and had to figure out how to set it up on Linux. The screenshots are in the "Using it with JACK&qu...

Re: Ardour monitor settings to use two soundcards

Ardour outsources all of its audio i/o to JACK, and I know you can set up JACK to do this. In the qjackctl setup dialog you can specify the input and output to different devices. On my machine I get intolerable latency that way, so I don't bother.

Re: Episodes (new album)

Been listening to this at work through the morning. There are some nice melodies here and there through the album. I am a big fan of baroque classical, with its harmonic consistency, so all of these key changes and unexpected chord transitions on your album are a little jarring to my ear. The sound ...

Re: solo ambient guitar

It sounds like it's a lot of fun to play through this setup. Makes me want to wire up a delay + reverb circuit of my own. Thanks for sharing!

Re: KVR May 2019 contest

Lots of cool sounds in this track. I especially like the water drip sounds in the percussion. Reminds me of "Stop Plastic Pollution" by Florian Schneider and Dan Lacksman: https://soundcloud.com/dazedandconfused/stop-plastic-pollution-florian-schneiderkraftwerk-co-founder-dan-lacksman-tele...

Re: Percussion Synthesizer

Also, I noticed that the filters can be low pass or high pass, but the high pass filters are labeled "hight," which I think is incorrect.

Re: Percussion Synthesizer

I got it up and running on Linux Mint 19.1 using the LV2 in Ardour. I was able to make a quick drum pattern using 4 sounds (4 instances of the plugin) in about an hour. (Although I think maybe half of that time was spent on the install.) Here is the result: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1vTkxGRA0...

Re: Song for Evelyn

Thanks, GMaq. I have yet to play this song at the cemetery. But I think that day is coming. I really like the AVL Drumkit LV2. Great sound, and so easy to use! I think my workflow is changed forever. Thanks for making all of those drum samples. My only complaint about it is actually an Ardour MIDI i...

Re: Which DAW to pick?

Connect guitar to DI-box, from di-box to audio interface, there to guitarix and then to daw. And sure, I would record both raw signal and guitarix-made, so that in case there is some fiddling with sounds, there is still raw signal available. Because di-boxes have also direct output, put that to som...

Re: Which DAW to pick?

You can use Guitarix in a few different ways. First is the way sysrqer just described: Guitar > interface > Guitarix (standalone) > DAW. This works really well as long as your latency is short. But guitarists tend to be very latency-sensitive, and my system isn't quite fast enough to use this setup....

You mean Musique Non Stop by KRAFTWERK? Yes, I was thinking that, but now that I listen to it again it is a bit more upbeat and uptempo than I was remembering: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uTQmwMsAmsc&list=PL-v2ZeBazuxFJQbAWyVJ21ui-1-bVs2eC&index=1 I love the Automat album. It has change...

Re: Song for Evelyn

Thanks, lilith! I've never been a big GNR fan, although I liked a few of their singles. I have never heard that track before, but they do some some pretty solid work on the acoustic guitar. I especially like the song's intro. My main acoustic guitar influences are John Denver, Jim Croce, and James T...

Re: Backups

I have been using rsnapshot ( https://rsnapshot.org/ ) for the last decade or so, and it works well. It is built on top of rsync, and is very configurable. I have it running on my NAS box, backing up to an external HDD. Unfortunately my studio computer in the basement gets poor wifi reception, so I ...
