youtube now having adverts in music videos

Postby jonetsu » Sat Nov 16, 2019 9:29 pm

This is not about music videos and concert videos I've never heard before. I've listened to those previously. There were no inserted advertisements during the playing Yesterday I listened to Magma "Hhai" and there was an ad near the end while the music was still playing. Today I start to listen to a Dhafer Youssef concert. There were some ads at the beginning, like with so many videos. But then later on, in a very smooth and meditative part, bam! an ad. It makes no sense whatsoever.

I'm trying to download it although the estimated time is 17 hours at the moment.

I personally do not think that it's the uploaders that have enabled this. Why would one literally massacre music like this for a couple of dollars ?

I use firefox and No Script. From a quick search it seems that there are some add-ons that will prevent youtube ads. Anyone has a recommendation as to which one would work best ?

Cheers.

From the web page it does not say that it is blocking brown matter from youtube although since it was formulated as reply I guess it does.

As I mentioned I'm using No Script, with the defaults removed. I do not want to pile up stuff that does the same thing in general. What's needed is a block specific to youtube.

I've used youtube-dl command line, and it hasn't yet downloaded any add content.
Some distros have a gui for it. Not the same as an enjoyable uninterupted stream,
but to me, youtube looks to be going full-on subscription in the near future,
adding annoyance after annoyance...

Isn't it. I also use youtube-dl since maybe 10 years or so. They haven't thought/figured out how to put adverts in downloads yet, which is good. I actually have a large collection of downloaded tutorials, music and concerts. Early on I gave importance to being able to have the content accessible w/o an internet connection. Recently I bought two excellent Go tutorials and downloaded all 82 G of videos and material instead of relying solely on an internet connection. I find it easier to pause/rewind with a local media player such as mpv than using firefox.

Still, that insertion of adverts while music is playing is simply nauseous. Nobody would have accepted that 20 years ago, let alone implementing it.

Things are not changing for the better perhaps. For instance, if one modifies NSS (standard certificate creation and related library and OS-independent platform (NSPR) from Mozilla) so that the chrome browser cannot use it, one will see that the chrome browser 'phones home' right at start up and needs NSS to do it. One can say well, that's to check for updates. OK. But then the chrome browser will refuse to load any web site subsequently to that.

firefox OTOH will work as usual until it needs NSS, for instance when one tries to access a bank account. Which is normal since NSS was modified. But firefox will nevertheless work browsing web sites until SSL/NSS is really needed. Which is not the case with chrome.

There's a basic difference in function between these two browsers. With chrome it is deemed as a systemic error to not being able to phone home at start up. I haven't traced the TCP/IP but it could be that it does that at every web site visit request from the user ? When a user wants to visit, say, Linux Musicians, chrome will quickly go to google saying something like hey, I'm going to LM now, do you need anything ? :)

Musicians should look at getting their music up on https://d.tube/ which is built on the Steem blockchain. No ads required to pay you rewards and it does not get censored either. There is also https://dsound.audio/ for purely audio stuff. I speak as a someone who has used Steem for over 3 years and has made a little from it. It paid for my Taylor guitar. It ought to appeal to open source fans (https://github.com/steemit/) and it is decentralised too.

BTW I was on this forum a while back and am getting back into recording now. Got Ubuntu Studio installed after the latest Ubuntu upgrade messed up my PC. Ardour is working well. Just trying to read up and watch videos to ensure I make the most of it.

Recording via M-Audio Delta 66 (+Omni i/o) and Zoom H4. Got Korg nanoKONTROL and M-Audio Uno for my Casio keyboard.
